How to Protect Your Tub if a Volcano Erupts

Mt. Spurr is rumbling, and social media is full of how to prepare for potential ash fall, including keeping you and your pets safe. So we wanted to cover how to protect your hot tub from ash fall.

Here’s what you need to know.

Before the Eruption (If You Have Warning)

Cover It Immediately – Use a tight-fitting cover to keep ash and debris out. If you expect heavy ashfall, secure a tarp over the cover for an extra layer of protection.

During the Eruption

Keep the Cover On – Do not remove it until the ashfall has stopped and ash is not blowing around.

After the Eruption Before You Use Your Tub

Carefully Remove Ash from the Cover – If you used a tarp, this is the easiest way to clean up.

Check the Water

  • If ash has entered the tub, do not run the jets or pump.
  • Test the pH and alkalinity (ash can be highly acidic).
  • If the water is contaminated, drain the tub completely before using.

Clean and Inspect the Filters Before Use

  • If ash gets into the system, remove and rinse the filters thoroughly with water.
  • If they are heavily clogged, replace them before restarting the hot tub.

Wipe Down the Interior and Exterior

  • Use a damp cloth or non-abrasive cleaner to remove any ash residue.
  • Rinse thoroughly to prevent buildup.
