Is your Hot Tub Cover Heavy?

Are you noticing that your hot tub cover is getting too heavy? You’re not alone, that is one most common mistakes made by hot tub owners. And most people don’t realize that there’s a problem until it’s too late.

The first thing you need to know is that a ‘healthy’ hot tub cover normally weighs between 50 to 75 pounds (the range is based on the size of the hot tub you own – the bigger the hot tub the heavier the cover). A new cover is fairly easy to lift of the hot tub; however; over time the cover will start getting heavier and heavier and when you find yourself needing extra help to lift your cover, that’s when you know there’s a problem.

The main reason why the cover gets heavier with time is that the foam core becomes waterlogged. The water that’s being soaked into the core makes the cover heavy. And once that occurs the cover becomes not effective at protecting your hot tub from the elements.

One big reason that causes a cover to become water logged is cracks in your cover.  Sitting or placing heavy objects on the cover is a big no-no because it can cause the cover to break. You may not notice it but once the cover cracks water will slowly start to penetrate into the foam core. Another cause of water logged foam is poor water chemistry. What that translate to is poor water balance which equates to corrosion. Over time corrosion disintegrate the vapor barrier around the foam cores.

A heavy hot tub cover is not only fully protecting your hot tub from the elements but also increasing the cost of running your spa. Which means higher electric bill. We recommend dealing with this problems now versus in the cold winter months. Although replacing the foam core is an option that takes time (you need to take apart the over, measure the foam and replace it with the same size and thickness foam) something that you don’t really want to do in the winter, leaving your hot tub open for days on end.
